"We
don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We
read and write poetry because we are members of the
human race. And the human race is filled with passion.
And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are
noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But
poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay
alive for. To quote from Whitman, "O me! O life!...
of the questions of these recurring; of the endless
trains of the faithless--of cities filled with the
foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life? Answer.
That you are here - that life exists, and identity;
that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute
a verse." That the powerful play goes on and
you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?

Dead
Poets Society (1989)
This is the movie of freedom and choices. The movie
that tells you to be yourself and choose to be what
you want to be. The English teacher (Robin Williams)
inspires his students through his love of poetry.
He makes them realize what they want to be and what
dream do they want to pursue. Tragically, one of his
students, finally, committed suicide after he was
pressure from his father to become a doctor instead
of his dream to be an actor. Even though the English
teacher is fired at the end, he has released his students
from fears. This movie emotion is very intense but
delightful. |

In
the Name of the Father (1994)
Based on the true story, this movie is very intense
and emotional between father and son. The story is
about an innocent Irish man (Lewis) is accused by
the English authority of being the IRA terrorists
responsible for the bombing of the Pub that kill five
innocent victims. With the use of cruelty to force
a confession by the polices, Lewis is jailed without
any wrongdoings for 15 years. His father's death is
a turning point for him to seek for justice. The only
lawyer who listens to him is the English defense attorney
(Emma Thompson). She, finally, successfully overturns
the case and set Lewis free. However, it's not an
easy task to do; in particular, when she has to deal
with a lot of obstacles that only faith and determination
can help her win this case. |

Good
Will Hunting (1997)
The movie script is remarkable and impressive. The
story is about a genius boy (Matt Demon) who is working
as a janitor in MIT helps solving the math problem
that even the MIT student cannot solve. The story
becomes so intense when the MIT professor tries to
help Will to realize his genius. Since Will comes
from a broken family, he never trusts anyone except
his buddy (Ben Affleck). No one seems to be able to
tame him but a psychologist (Robin William) who also
has the wound of his wife's death. Both of them come
together and lay the foundation of trust until they
become the best friends who heal each other's pain.
Avoiding pain is always a reason for someone to close
themselves from other people. |

Pulp
Fiction (1994)
Even though this movie might be too bloody (a lot
of drug use, graphic violence, and sex), it is full
of excitement and twists. I love the way Mr. Tarintino
narrates this movie. The movie is like composing with
a bunch of short stories, all of them related with
some incidents or people. I need to pay closed attention
to understand the whole story. The conversation in
this movie is so tasty and rich; in particular, at
the end that Samuel Jackson lectured the couple robber. |

Thelma
& Louise (1991)
This is a real girl gone wild movie.
It portrays the real friendship, freedom and liberation
of life, particularly, women who are under cultural
stereotype and men's control. Louise (Sarandon), independent
and strong character, and Thelma (Davis) run away
from crime that happend because of men's attitude
toward women. Louise killed a guy who tried to rape
Thelma. On the way of journey, Louise has liberated
her submissive friend from her unfaithful and abusive
husband. However, when the desperate time comes and
Louise almost defeated by obstacles, it's her submissive
friend: Thelma who stands up and lead the situation.
It is not a happy ending story in term of physical
happiness but it's a soul liberation that, at the
end, these two best friends choose death rather than
living in a social cell. |
