Gay Marriage in California?

09/07/05

Gay marriage was a hot button in the last election which I believe it was one of the main reasons that sent Bush to the White House for the second term. This issue has cooled down; the voice of Constitution amendment to ban gay-marriage has faded away.

Two years ago, Massachusetts became the first state in this land that recognized the gay-marriage even though the Governor-Mitt Romney- was pathetically trying to challenge the high court’s decision just to benefit his own ambition and political agenda.

Today, California becomes the first legislative body in the country to approve same-sex marriages after two earlier defeats in the Assembly. However, this bill is expected to be vetoed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger whose approval rating is sinking below 40. Strategically, it will be wise not to risk his re-election next year and his potentially national election in the future by cheerfully welcoming this bill.

Gay Marriage in California is still far from reality considering the re-election next year unless the Governor sees the sea change in the public support to this issue. To override his veto is a very tall order for the Democrat even though they control both chambers.

Again, I am not that crazy about gay marriage. But I think it’s the right of the minority in the society to have without any discrimination from the government. We should be all protected under the same Constitution. Gay marriage is the last frontier of the human rights after men of color’s right, interracial marriage and women’s right.

We will see. Politicians do not watch out for our own good but they watch out for their own good.
